NASA works hard to protect the planet from the threat of asteroid impacts and in order to do so needs to be able to closely monitor them.
They are calling on all hobbyists, amateur astronomers and anyone who owns a telescope to download the “Asteroid Data Hunter” app and help them detect the location of asteroids and other NEO’s (Near Earth objects) by taking photographs of the sky which you can upload to the app. The easy download and user interface means that anyone with the time and equipment can help to determine whether asteroids are a danger or a discovery which could further our knowledge of the universe.
There is no good way for professional astronomers to verify every detection and so NASA recognise and appreciate the benefits of receiving assistance from the public.
The app is currently compatible with Windows 7.1+, Mac 10.10X+ and Linux Ubuntu
