What is microvolunteering?

Microvolunteering can be described as those actions that benefit a worthy cause, where the main bulk of the task can be completed on demand in one or more sessions of up to 30 minutes.

It is highly enjoyable work done by people in their pyjamas who know they can save the world in a few minutes.

Most of the actions can be performed online, from the comfort of your own home or on the go. The diversity of microvolunteering tasks covers almost all imaginable jobs and occupations, going from simple play, to advanced professional work.

What is a worthy cause?

It can be anything related to human rights, education, poverty, democracy, gender equality, environment or art… the challenges humanity faces today are very diverse, and the demand for people eager to help is also great. See our worthy cause definition webpage for more information.

Microvolunteering is relatively new. For the purposes of our consultancy service, we have divided microvolunteering projects into three categories :

1. Existing successful projects.

Our consultancy service won 1st prize at the Nantes Creative Generations, NCG Cooperation Award 2014, that is designed to support innovative citizen initiatives. We collaborated with 2 other projects from Europe to create ‘Graine de Jardin’, an initiative to create an urban garden where citizenship through microvolunteering workshops could take place. Reports and Findings

The Institute of Volunteering Research published a major report in June, 2012, ‘Microvolunteering: doing some good through smartphones?‘ that looked into the current engagement and the future needs of people microvolunteering via a smartphone.

Here’s a few extracts from the report:

By way of introducing the topic, it stated that:
.
“….much of the recent discussion surrounding micro-volunteering has revolved around its potential in engaging people who don’t participate in voluntary action and charitable giving and in providing a catalyst for further engagement in other forms of participation”.

One of it’s findings concluded by stating that it’s report:
.
“….highlights the need for micro-opportunities to be designed and targeted in different ways to wider volunteering. A greater emphasis should be placed on the activity, creating new and different actions that are easy and quick to complete and potentially feed into peoples values and interests.”


Sparked Consulting issued a White Paper in August, 2013 stating that a new model of volunteering, called The Mission Driven Volunteering could allow associations and their volunteers to focus their limited resources,  and measure everything they do by how well it supports and contributes to the mission of their organizations. It also states that Mission-driven volunteers embrace the concept of adhocracy and micro-volunteering, allowing diverse groups of members to contribute in ways that make the most sense to them.

Here’s a few extracts from the report

“While younger, upcoming generations are willing and enthusiastic volunteers, they seek different kinds of volunteer experiences that their predecessors, ones that are less about structure, position, and prestige, and are focused instead on independence, meaning, impact, and “getting it done”

“The more time spent away from directly advancing the mission of the association and the more time spent on administrative trivia, the greater the volunteer dissatisfaction“

.

“A new working definition for volunteerism: giving one’s time and talent to drive mission. The decision to volunteer is a choice , and it’s one made based on the ability to further the mission of the association through a meaningful opportunity that provides clear results”
.
“The answer is really found in technological advances, particularly around the Internet, social media, and mobile, which both facilitate and increase demand for ad hoc and virtual volunteering opportunities”


The report goes on to say that:
“The common characteristics of micro-volunteering jobs are:
Mission-related
Discrete and/or small
Non-hierarchical
Of the moment
Synchronized mass mobilization
Does not require an application process, screening, or training period
Takes only minutes to a few hours to complete
Does not require an ongoing commitment “
