World Community Grid brings together people from across the globe to benefit humanity by creating the world’s largest non-profit computing grid. They do this by pooling surplus processing power from volunteers’ devices. To participate, just download and install the secure, free software that captures the spare processing power of your computer, smartphone or tablet, and harnesses it for scientific research. The software will not interfere with your day-to-day use of your computer.
The way that it works is that when your pc is idle, it will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid’s server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your device performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!
Scientific projects that your computer could be working on include helping to fight childhood cancer, tackling AIDS, and finding new materials for next generation solar cells.
